The Moment I Could Finally Hear Him

My Forward Focus Experience

In honour of International Cochlear Implant Day, I wanted to share a moment that reminded me just how life-changing hearing technology can be.

Living with cochlear implants means you are constantly learning new ways to hear, adapt, and navigate the world around you. Technology continues to evolve, and sometimes a small feature can make a very big difference.

Recently, I had one of those moments.

My husband and I were out celebrating our wedding anniversary. We chose a local pub for lunch, thinking it would be a relaxed and quiet place to enjoy some time together.

Well… we were wrong.

It must have been senior’s day because the place was absolutely packed. The room was buzzing with conversation, laughter, chairs moving, plates clinking, and music playing in the background. It was loud. Really loud.

As someone with cochlear implants, noisy environments can be challenging. When there are many sounds happening at once, it can be difficult to focus on the voice directly in front of you.

I found myself struggling to hear my husband speaking across the table. I could see his lips moving, but the surrounding noise was competing with his voice.

Then I remembered something.

One of the programs available on my Kanso processors is called Forward Focus. I had seen it before in my hearing app but had never actually used it.

So I thought, why not give it a go?

I opened the app on my phone and activated Forward Focus.

What happened next honestly surprised me.

The surrounding background noise seemed to fade away, while the voice in front of me became clearer and easier to follow. It felt like the chaos of the room had softened, allowing me to focus directly on the person sitting across from me.

My husband.

And in that moment, I got emotional.

I could hear him properly again in a space that had felt overwhelming just moments earlier. I felt the tears well up because something so simple, hearing the person you love, suddenly felt possible again in a busy environment.

My husband noticed immediately.

He looked concerned and asked if I was okay, thinking something had gone wrong. When I explained what had happened and how the program worked, his reaction made me laugh.

He said he wished he could turn the background noise down too.

And honestly, who wouldn’t want that ability?

Moments like this remind me how powerful hearing technology can be. Cochlear implants are not a “fix,” and they don’t restore hearing in the same way hearing people experience sound. But they are an incredible tool that allows access to sound, communication, and connection.

Features like Forward Focus help people like me navigate environments that would otherwise be exhausting or overwhelming.

But more importantly, they allow moments like this one.

A simple lunch. A conversation with my husband. And the ability to hear him clearly in a noisy room.

Sometimes accessibility isn’t about grand changes.

Sometimes it’s about a small setting in an app that helps you reconnect with the people who matter most.

And for me, that moment was a reminder of just how far hearing technology has come, and how grateful I am to be part of that journey.

There’s something quietly powerful about the way this story unfolds, especially in how it captures that long wait before everything finally clicks into place. It made me think about how clarity, whether in communication or systems, can change everything. In a different space, trying to unify inventory on Salesforce brings a similar sense of relief when things finally align. That moment of connection you described feels honest and grounded, and it stuck with me well after reading.
