Our
Story

The Unspoken Communication Project

The Unspoken Communication Project was founded in 2022 with one vision in mind: to bridge the gap between the Deaf and hearing worlds. What started as personal reflections and blogs has grown into a movement dedicated to breaking down barriers and raising awareness around inclusive communication.

Our work is grounded in the belief that communication is one of life’s most powerful tools. By improving how we connect in schools, workplaces, homes, and communities, we can create environments where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

The Project provides tailored workshops, training, and cultural awareness programs that adapt to the needs of individuals and organisations with flexible options. Whether it’s through Auslan education, Deaf awareness coaching, or inclusive leadership strategies, our goal is to empower people with the skills and confidence to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

At its heart, this Project is about more than teaching language; it’s about changing perspectives, fostering empathy, and building a world where everyone belongs.

Emma Sullivan is the driving force behind The Unspoken Communication Project. Born into a family of both hearing and Deaf siblings, Emma has lived her life at the intersection of two worlds. Her unique journey of growing up severely deaf, later becoming profoundly deaf after an accident, and receiving bilateral cochlear implants has shaped her deep understanding of communication barriers and the bridges needed to overcome them.

With professional experiences as an Auslan Interpreter in schools and joining the Corporate World as a Senior Customer Service Officer and HR Consultant, Emma has seen firsthand how inclusion (or the lack of it) shapes lives. Her lived experiences of advocacy, alongside challenges of discrimination and resilience, fuel her commitment to creating spaces where communication flows freely and no one is left behind.

Emma is not only a passionate advocate but also a wife, mother of two, nature lover, and student of Business (majoring Human Resources). Her lived empathy, professional insights, and bilingual fluency in both spoken English and Auslan make her uniquely positioned to inspire change and guide others in building more inclusive futures.

Emma also holds a valid Working with Children Check, Level 2 First Aid and completed Cert. in Education Support (Disability Support).
